Meditation has proven holistic health benefits affecting the whole person - body, mind, emotion, and spirit. This is why, Dr. Dellosa says it is recommended not only by spiritual teachers, but also by physicians and mental health professionals.

In Dr. Dellosa's practice, he has found that many people are now taking up meditation to improve their lives. "Some meditate to de-stress, relax, and rejuvenate. Others do it for personal growth. And many meditate for their own spiritual purposes. Meditation disciplines both body and mind. It is a practice based on mental focus, awareness, and mindfulness."

For the novice meditator, Dr. Dellosa advises finding a form of meditation the suits your purpose and personality. You can learn to meditate from different sources: Traning can be provided by books, videos, or teachers or school.

Ideally, aspiring meditators should get a qualified expert to teach them the proper body and mental mechanics of meditative practice. "Without a teacher or school, meditation can be done incorrectly, resulting in physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual dysfunction," notes Dr. Dellosa.

After learning the right way to meditate, people who just want stress relief and relaxation can start doing it on their own. "However, long-term guidance and supervision from a teacher or school is required for those on a spiritual quest or want to develop their human potential," the doctor adds.
