... sleep clinic for insomnia and other sleep disorders in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist))

"I JUANnder" is gma network's myth-busting/ mystery-solving tv show that challenges widely-accepted, long-held filipino beliefs. susan enriquez and cesar apolinario are hosts of the show and their crew came over to ask me this one question: can a 1-hour massage can replace 8 hours of sleep? of course, the answer can only be "of course not!" people have individualized sleep requirements and need to go through many cycles of sleep (stages 1 to REM) throughout one night. if sleep requirements are unmet, then the body and mind deteriorate.

people often consult me for these types of sleep problems:

(1) initial insomnia- difficulty in initiating sleep

(2) middle insomnia- frequent awakenings in the middle of sleep

(3) terminal insomnia- waking up earlier than usual and then not being able to get back to sleep

(4) unrestful sleep- feeling that the sleep is incomplete even if one's usual sleep requirement has been met or not feeling refreshed upon waking up

(5) superficial sleep- being easily awakened during sleep (or "tulog manok"), having a sense that the mind is still active during sleep (i.e., "gising ang diwa"), or having an awareness or consciousness of one's environment even during sleep

(6) total insomnia- feeling that one has not slept at all throughout the night.

common reasons for insomnia include stress, anxiety (panic attacks), depression, regular alcohol use, intake of caffeine, and for some people, smoking. a complete medical work-up is important for ruling out any medical condition that may cause insomnia.

non-pharmacological ways to overcome insomnia include daytime exercise, stress management techniques, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, brain wave entrainment, music therapy, clinical massage, sleep hygiene practices, and lifestyle modification.

pharmacological treatments include vitamin/mineral supplements, herbal medications, anti-histamines, anti-depressant medications, anti-anxiety medications, sleeping pills, and neuroleptics.

... relationship counseling: infidelity and falling in love with a playboy ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, philippines)

Anatomy of a Playboy
by Chit L. Lijauco (excerpts)
The Philippine Tatler: The Spirit of High Society

[Being a playboy] goes by many names. "The other terms would... be Don Juanism, promiscuity, sexual compulsion, love or sex addiction, etcetera, etcetera," says Dr. Randy Dellosa, psychiatrist-psychologist. The subject matter being referred to is man's preoccupation with women and predilection for sex that could cause him to be unfaithful to the relationship he is involved in.

Is one born a playboy or is he influenced into becoming one? The literature points to a composite of causes. Dellosa, who works with a lot of teenagers, leans towards the belief that men are naturally polygamous. "Our biological task is to reproduce and I believe we haven't really evolved that far from our ape ancestors," he says.

Genetics and modelling are also strong causes of playboyism. "You can attribute it to having a lot of testosterone which makes men, and women too, sexually aggressive. Meanwhile, some boys ... grow up in an environment where they see promiscuous behaviour around, maybe in their father or uncles. There is strong possibility these boys will take after them," says Dellosa.

Dellosa doubts that [playboys change after they get married]: What you get before marriage will worsen after marriage, generally speaking." Admitting that there may be exceptions to the rule, he's still in awe as to why women fall for men who they know are promiscuous.

Dr. Natividad Dayan has a fixed attitude towards philandering men. Handling so many annulment cases where infidelity is the number one cause, she's seen enough as to advise her women clients, "Keep away from this type of man, unless you're a masochist."

... parenting and the making of spoiled brats ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, philippines)

zoe channel's tv show "word up" showed up at my clinic to do a segment on "spoiled brats."

parental factors for creating a spoiled brat include:
(1) over-indulgence: giving your child too much of what he or she wants.

(2) submissiveness: allowing your child to impose his or her wants on you.

(3) permissiveness: not setting limits on your child's behaviors, not giving structure to your child's routines.

(4) over-protection: shielding your child from situations that get him or her frustrated.

(5) denial: refusing to believe that your child has a attitudinal/ behavioral problem.

(6) role-modeling: immature parents breed immature children.

... 'dirty finger fad' has bad effects on public, expert says ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, philippines)

Sunod-sunod nating nakita ang pagdi-dirty finger ng mga kilalang personalidad sa media nitong linggo. Babala ng eksperto, may masamang epekto ito sa publiko! Magba-Bandila si Apples Jalandoni. Bandila, Hulyo 8, 2011, Biyernes.

Apples Jalandoni, field reporter for abs-cbn's news program bandila, interviewed me on the latest celebrity trend on middle-finger flicking. in a nutshell, i told her that the ongoing fad is a case of "copycat middle-finger flicking."

not only do we assume the values and attitudes of our authority figures, but also copy their behaviors. when we see authority figures flagrantly displaying outbursts of rage and obscene gestures, it sends the message that these are socially acceptable behaviors worthy of emulation.

... pepito manaloto undergoes life coaching, acupuncture, and touch therapy ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapist, psychologist, psychiatrist)

      .
as a psychiatrist, i believe that my clients deserve more than a medical prescription. medications are certainly important and oftentimes necessary, but clients can be helped through natural and holistic ways too. i guess that's what motivated gma's pepito manaloto to visit me. in his quest for psychological and physical health, he visited my clinic for a 3-in-1 session of life coaching, acupuncture, and touch therapy.
      .
life coaching is about helping people deal with their common life problems, teaching them necessary attitudes and life skills to overcome the problem, and assisting them to attain their higher goals.
      .
acupuncture is the ancient chinese practice of inserting needles into the body to correct any energy flow imbalances, thereby facilitating recovery from illnesses.
      .
touch therapy is a body-mind approach which uses light touch and gentle body manouvers to make suppressed and hidden emotions, images, and memories surface to the client's conscious mind.
      .
pepito manaloto was indeed a character, and it was a hilarious experience having him and his friends around!

... graphology and personality analysis in the philippines ... (life coach, counselor, psychotherapy, psychologist, psychiatrist)

      .
GMA's jessica soho sent her 'state of the nation' tv crew to interview me on graphology. graphology is an ancient practice of analyzing personality through one's handwriting. this practice existed in china 3000 years ago and even in ancient rome.
      .
handwriting can also be considered as "brainwriting." after all, it is the brain (which contains our mind) that coordinates with the nerves, bones, and muscles of our shoulder, arm, hand, and fingers to produce the scribblings on paper. handwriting is as unique as thumbprints. no two styles of handwriting are totally alike.
      .
so what are the elements analyzed in handwriting? pressure, size, slant, slope of a line, spacing between letters, spacing between words, placement on paper, bars, loops, dots, decorations, distortions ... in short, everything!
      .
graphology is always fun to do. peeking at a person's handwriting gives you a wealth of information about that person. if you're wondering what people usually ask me to find out through graphology, it's whether they're compatible with their partner. and for that, they secretly sneak out a sample of their partner's handwriting to have me analyze it.
